Why Soy Candles Deserve a Little Extra Care

Soy wax is a beautiful, clean-burning alternative to paraffin and to get the most out of every pour, a few simple habits make all the difference. Whether you're burning one of our hand-poured Studio Glow Candle Co. candles or any other high quality soy candle, these tips will help you enjoy every last hour of fragrance.

1. The First Burn Is Everything

The single most important thing you can do for a new candle is allow it to reach a full melt pool on its very first burn. This means letting it burn until the wax has melted all the way to the edges of the jar, typically 2–4 hours depending on the diameter.

Skipping this step can cause tunnelling: a narrow channel forms down the centre of the candle, wasting wax along the sides and shortening the candle's life significantly.

2. Trim Your Wick Every Time

Before each burn, trim your wick to about 5 mm (¼ inch). A long wick creates a larger, hotter flame that burns through wax too quickly, produces excess soot, and can cause the jar to overheat.

A wick trimmer makes this easy, but small scissors work just as well. Remove any trimmed bits from the wax before lighting.

3. Burn in Intervals

Soy candles perform best when burned for 2–4 hours at a time. Burning longer than 4 hours can cause the wick to mushroom, the wax to overheat, and fragrance throw to diminish. Shorter burns (under an hour) don't allow the melt pool to fully form.

4. Keep It Away from Drafts

Drafts from open windows, fans, or air vents cause uneven burning, flickering, and excess soot. Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from airflow for the cleanest, most even burn.

5. Know When to Stop

Stop burning your candle when 1–1.5 cm (½ inch) of wax remains at the bottom. Burning below this level can cause the jar to overheat and crack. The good news? The jar can be cleaned out and repurposed for other uses.

6. Store Candles Properly

Keep unused candles in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. UV light can fade the colour of the wax and degrade fragrance oils over time. A candle lid or dust cover also helps preserve the scent between burns.
